GARY | A 28-year-old Illinois woman died Saturday after she and her husband were struck by a pickup truck while standing outside their crashed Honda Civic on I-80/94, police said.
The impact propelled the couple over a barrier wall with the woman landing on the inner shoulder of Interstate 80/94 to the Central Avenue ramp, police said. The husband landed in the middle of the ramp.
The Lake County coroner's office identified the woman as Annley Mercy Wilson, of the 1800 block of Vista Court in Schaumburg.
Coroner's investigators were called to the crash, which occurred at 10:38 a.m. Wilson was pronounced dead at 11:30 a.m. at the scene because of blunt force trauma, according to the coroner's office.
A preliminary investigation showed the 2009 Honda Civic, driven by the woman's husband, Roise Abraham, 28, was eastbound on Interstate 80 in the right center lane when he lost control of the car as he drove under the Interstate 65 overpass about one mile west of Central Avenue, according to a news release from Indiana State Police.
The Honda spun and hit the barrier wall that separates I-80 from the ramp to Central Avenue, police said.
The Honda came to a rest at an angle facing east on the outer shoulder, where the couple were struck minutes after exiting their car.
Police said the couple were hit by a Chevrolet pickup truck driven by Sam Aprahamian, 38, of Valparaiso, who was eastbound in the right lane and lost control of his truck as he came under the I-65 overpass, striking the Honda and causing both vehicles to hit the outer barrier wall before coming to rest.
Abraham was taken to Methodist Hospitals Northlake Campus in Gary with nonthreatening injuries, police said.
Aprahamian was taken to the same hospital with complaints of pain and minor lacerations.
Police said the interstate was mostly wet with scattered slick spots at the time of the accident.
