Steel mill contractor Indiana Flame Service plans to spend $14 million to upgrade technology and equipment at its Burns Harbor and Gary operations and create 24 new jobs in Northwest Indiana by 2015, the state's economic development agency said Friday.
The Indiana Economic Development Corp. also said Indiana Flame Service will relocate a portion of its research and development activity to Burns Harbor from France.
Dan Hasler, Indiana secretary of commerce and CEO of the Indiana Economic Development Corp., said in a news release the company's decision to grow in Northwest Indiana reflects a payoff from the state's job creation efforts.
Indiana Flame Service was founded in 2003 as a subsidiary of the privately held Detroit-based Edw. C. Levy Co. The company designs and installs patented steel slab cutting and conditioning equipment for the automotive, manufacturing, green energy and military sectors.
In all, 42 employees work at five facilities in Gary and Burns Harbor. Additional maintenance and production workers will be added in Burns Harbor next year, according to the Indiana Economic Development Corp.
The Indiana Economic Development Corp. offered Indiana Flame Service up to $240,000 in performance-based training grants based on the job creation plans as presented. The town of Burns Harbor will consider additional property tax abatement at the request of the nonprofit organization Duneland Economic Development Co.
