GARY | Indiana University alumni are in the midst of a book drive to benefit organizations in Northwest Indiana.

It runs through Monday and is part of IU Cares Month activities throughout the state. Individuals may deposit gently used books at 14 Strack & Van Til supermarkets and 28 Centier Banks in Lake and Porter County.

The IU Alumni Association Lakeshore Region Chapter, IU Northwest Alumni Association, the Neal-Marshall Club of Northwest Indiana and the IU Northwest Student Alumni Association will sort through the books and box them for distribution.

Over the past five years, more than 23,000 books have been collected.

Last year, the alumni groups distributed books to 20 organizations in Lake and Porter counties, including charter schools, Boys & Girls Clubs, area YMCAs, shelters and day cares.
