GARY | The Indiana University Northwest Department of Communication and the IU Northwest Communication Association invites the campus and community to a series of free presentations in recognition of Communication Week, scheduled for April 15 through April 20. This year the theme is “Speaking for Change.”

The events kick-off with student showcases at 5:30 p.m. on April 15 in Hawthorn Hall, room 410.

The highlight of the week is the keynote address by Todd Deloney, Director of UN-Finished Business Ministries Inc. who will present “Speaking for Change” at 7 p.m. on April 16 in Raintree Hall, room 102.

Deloney will speak about his effort in helping Indiana University to recognize Martin Luther King Jr.'s birthday as a national holiday.

Remarks will be made by Juniper Hall, the daughter of the late Katie Hall, the city clerk official who also spoke out to help to make the Martin Luther King, Jr. Day an official holiday. This will be followed by a presentation from Alex Semchuck, IU Northwest visiting lecturer and director of the documentary, ”Stagnation of Hope.” The film examines the past, present, and future of Gary.

Throughout Communication Week, various communication courses will highlight students’ work.

IU Northwest alumni will present a one-hour panel discussion entitled, “Communication Career Boosters” that will take place at 7 p.m. on April 18 in Hawthorn Hall, room 107. At 8:15 p.m., students involved in student-run IU Northwest radio station, WIUN, will provide a tour of the radio station.

The annual Speech Forum in which IU Northwest public speaking students will present their views on various social and cultural topics will take place starting at 10 a.m. on April 20 in Raintree Hall, room 102.

A panel of judges chosen from IU Northwest and the community will score the speeches and the top three students will receive plaques. A reception with refreshments will follow the Speech Forum.
