GARY | The Indiana University Northwest campus and the greater Northwest Indiana community are invited to view the work of Bonnie Zimmer in the Gallery for Contemporary Art. The exhibit, “Objects of Contemplation: Rural Hybrids,” runs through March 8. A reception is planned for 3-5 p.m. Feb. 21 in the Gallery, located in the Savannah Center.

Zimmer specializes in visual art and education and serves as an associate professor of art and assistant professor of education at St. Joseph’s College in Rensselaer.

IU Northwest Gallery Director Ann Fritz describes Zimmer as an environmental artist. She collects objects that others dispose of and uses them to create sculptures, each piece telling a story of society’s treatment of the environment.

Zimmer has received several Indiana Art Commission Fellowships for her artwork, as well as several teaching awards, including the Outstanding Indiana Secondary Art Educator and Outstanding Educator of the Year in Indiana in 1997, and Outstanding Western Region Art Educator in 1998.

Zimmer earned her Bachelor of Fine Arts degree in Textiles from Indiana University and her master’s degree in Art Education from Purdue University.

The IU Northwest Gallery for Contemporary Art is open to the public Monday through Thursday from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. and Friday from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. The gallery is located in the Savannah Center neighboring the IU Northwest Book Store.
