GARY | The Indiana University Northwest Geology Club is proud to host the second annual Walk for Water beginning at 10 a.m. on April 13 from The Marquette Perk, located at 900 N. Shelby St. in Gary. Proceeds benefit The Thirst Project, an organization that raises funds to provide clean, safe drinking water to developing countries.

Those who would like to learn more about the fundraising effort should plan to attend an informational session led by Seth Maxwell, founder of the Thirst Project at 4 p.m., Tuesday, April 9 in the Bruce W. Bergland Auditorium, located in the Savannah Center.

Participants will walk to Lake Michigan with empty milk jugs in hand and transport water along a one-mile route to emulate the struggle that women and children in developing countries face every day. The walk is intended to raise awareness about the struggles people in Africa go through to obtain clean water. In Africa, people on average have to walk one kilometer to reach a clean water source. In some cases, even the cleanest source that they have is polluted.

Following the walk, games and food for all of the volunteers and participants will be provided.

The Geology Club hopes to raise at least $5,000, which will be used to build a well in an African village.

Last year’s event raised more than $2,300, enough to install a well and provide hygiene education in Suctarr, Sierra Leone. This year’s goal is to raise $5,000 which will help The Thirst Project reach its goal of providing the entire country of Swaziland with clean, safe drinking water.
