HOBART | Four outstanding Indiana University Northwest students were honored at the 26th annual IU Northwest Scholarship Gala Celebration on Thursday night at Avalon Manor.

The students are Kaleigh Fetcko, Rana Torabi, Joseph Popa and Miracle Anokwute.

Fetcko, a senior in the College of Arts and Sciences, is majoring in psychology with minors in biology and chemistry and is on the pre-med track. Fetcko, of Crown Point, is a 2009 graduate of Lake Central High School and hopes to be accepted into the IU School of Medicine.

Torabi, of Valparaiso, also is a pre-med student. She said there are great professors at Indiana University Northwest, and she looks forward to applying to medical school in the spring. Torabi, who said she loves children, plans to be a pediatrician.

Popa, 30, of Valparaiso, changed his career from engineering to nursing because of his interest in helping people. He said he first began volunteering at St. Joseph Hospital in Phoenix, Ariz., then came to this area to begin his studies.

"I care about nursing, and I believe I can make a difference," he said.

Anokwute, 20, of Merrillville, has been accepted into the IU Northwest School of Medicine and is excited about starting the program in the fall. Anokwute, who has earned several scholarships, said he looks forward to practicing in the area.

Because of the generosity to them, Anokwute and Fetcko have created the first graduating class endowed scholarship. They hope to raise at least $10,000 to benefit IU Northwest full- and part-time undergraduate students who are engaged in campus organizations and the community.

IU Northwest Chancellor William Lowe commended all of the students for learning philanthropy and balancing their busy school life with family and other responsibilities.

IU Vice President John Applegate said the investment in a college education provides an "exceptionally sound return."
