GARY | Indiana University Northwest will host a free workshop for individuals interested in coaching a FIRST Lego League Team. The workshop is set for 5:30 to 9 p.m., Sept. 20 in the John W. Anderson Library Conference Center.

FIRST Lego League is an international competition in which teams of elementary and middle school students work as a team to program a NXT Lego robot. The two-part challenge is based on a real-world topic. Teams of up to 10 children, with one adult coach, participate in the challenge by programming an autonomous robot to score points on a themed playing field and developing a solution to a problem they have identified.

At the upcoming workshop, attendees will learn background about FIRST® programs; key components of the FLL competition project; what to expect at a tournament; team best practices; and the Robot Game, including basics of the missions, hints in robot building and the basics in programming the robot.

The workshop is facilitated by IU Northwest lecturer Lin Wozniewski and Kitty Bellis, three-time award-winning ZBOTS coach, championship tournament volunteer and clinic instructor.

Coaches will gain practice programming the robots and learn coaching skills, including how to help the students work together as a team, and how to teach kids about winning and losing graciously.

Attendees should bring a laptop computer with NXT or EV 3 software loaded.

A FIRST Lego League qualifying tournament will take place at IU Northwest on November 24. The Indiana Championship Tournament takes place at Indiana University Purdue University Fort Wayne (IPFW) December 14.
