Thomas G. Coley will serve as Ivy Tech Community College's interim chancellor for the northwest region, President Thomas J. Snyder announced Thursday.
The move comes after the announcement of the retirement of Chancellor J. Guadalupe Valtierra.
Coley is chancellor for the college's North Central region, which includes campuses in South Bend, Goshen and Warsaw. He will retain his current position while serving as interim chancellor for the campuses in Gary, East Chicago, Valparaiso and Michigan City.
Coley has been in higher education for more than 32 years. Before joining Ivy Tech in 2011, Coley was president of Scott Community College in Scott County, Iowa. He also served as vice chancellor of instruction for the East Iowa Community College District and vice chancellor of technology and communications for the same district.
He has held similar positions in Illinois, Ohio, Oregon, California and Maryland.
Coley earned his doctoral degree in education administration and his master's degree in political science from the University of Wisconsin-Madison and his bachelor's degree in political science from Moorhead State University in Minnesota.
He is a member of the Rotary Club of South Bend and sits on the boards of the Economic Development Corp. of Elkhart County, the Michiana Family YMCA, the Minority and Women Business Enterprise Diversity Board, the Northern Indiana Workforce Board, Ronald McDonald House Charities of Michiana and WNIT Public Television.
