GARY | A Lake County officer and his K-9 partner helped capture a suspect in Gary wanted on multiple warrants Thursday night.
David Serrano, 45, of Gary was arrested just after 7:15 p.m. in the 2300 block of Hobart Street, Lake County Sheriff's Department spokeswoman Patti Van Til said.
Officers went to the Hobart Street address to serve four active warrants to Serrano. Police said Serrano fled toward the rear of the home when they arrived.
Officer Bryan Zabrecky ordered Serrano to stop then released K-9 Zahr, who knocked into Serrano before he continued to flee.
Zahr then bit Serrano on the back of the thigh. Police took Serrano into custody before he was transported to the Methodist Hospitals Northlake Campus for treatment of the dog bite.
Serrano was treated and released from the hospital and transported to the Lake County Jail. In addition to warrants for driving under the influence, criminal recklessness, numerous traffic offenses and possession of cocaine, he also was charged with resisting law enforcement and possession of paraphernalia.
Police said they found a crack pipe on Serrano during his arrest.
