GARY | Lake County Councilwoman Elsie Franklin, D-Gary, underwent surgery Thursday following a bout with chest pains.
Council President Ted Bilski, D-Hobart, said Friday, "They brought her into Northlake Methodist yesterday afternoon and they had to give her a (coronary) stent and she has been stabilized and not critical. She was in the intensive care unit after surgery."
Bilski said he didn't know her prognosis or when she may be able to return to council business. "I'm hoping she will now feel better now that she has gotten this stent."
Franklin is one of the two county council members representing the city of Gary as well as some precincts in unincorporated Calumet Township since 2002.
She has served as chairwoman for the Gary Democratic precinct organization for more than six years.
