CROWN POINT | Lake County prosecutors have dismissed all charges against a Portage man accused of multiple sex offenses.
William West, 44, formerly of Gary, was charged in November with nine felony counts in the alleged sexual assault of two local teens.
Lake County court records show all charges were dismissed Jan. 11 on the basis of the state being unable to prove its case beyond a reasonable doubt.
Defense attorney Michael Lambert, of Merrillville, said the evidence against his client was conflicting.
"One victim recanted, claiming duress, and the other overpainted her original story," Lambert said.
