CROWN POINT | A Merrillville man was sentenced to 20 years in prison Tuesday for a shooting that left one man dead and another injured.
Derrick D. Rainey, 23, killed Sean Powell, 25, of Merrillville, and wounded Braylin Carpenter on May 13, 2012, near 61st Avenue and Pennsylvania Street in Merrillville, according to court records.
Rainey pleaded guilty in May. He was accused of getting into a dispute with the victims outside a Gary bar, where Rainey and Powell exchanged errant gunshots. Rainey followed the victims to the dead-end of Pennsylvania Street, where he fatally shot Powell in the chest and severely wounded Carpenter.
The Lake County prosecutor's office initially charged Rainey with Powell's murder, but reduced it to voluntary manslaughter.
