GARY | A 20-year-old Merrillville man died Sunday at the site of a roadside pond near the Indiana Toll Road, the Lake County coroner's office said.

Jelani Lewis, of the 7200 block of Pierce Avenue, was pronounced dead at 2:15 p.m. near mile marker 16 of the Toll Road, the coroner's office said. The cause and manner of death were pending.

Indiana State Police had been called to the scene about 12:30 p.m. about a report of a person who had gone into a nearby pond and disappeared, Sgt. Dan Leslie said.

The pond is the type created when soil is dug out for use in construction projects, Leslie said.

Leslie said he found the body of a man in about 18 feet of water, about 120 feet from the shore of the pond.

A witness told police the man swam out into the pond, went under and did not resurface, Leslie said.
