HAMMOND | A Merrillville woman was sentenced in federal court Wednesday to two years of probation after pleading guilty to aiding or assisting in preparing false income tax returns.
Chanel Bandy was sentenced to two years on each of the two counts, and the sentences are to run concurrently.
A co-defendant in the case, Charles Standifer, also of Gary, was sentenced last month to 18 months in federal prison, according to court records.
Bandy and Standifer were indicted along with two fellow employees of Quick Sam Tax Refund, 3812 Broadway, Gary.
Also charged were Britney Walker-Lipsey, of East Chicago, and Rhonda Murphy, of Gary.
The indictment stated the defendants completed tax returns for customers listing inflated annual incomes and other expenses and captured tax credits for people who may not have been eligible to receive them.
