GARY | The Gary Community School Corp. is teaming up with Earvin “Magic” Johnson, the legendary NBA Hall of Famer, philanthropist and businessman, who will be the keynote speaker at a fundraising event for Gary students.
A Gary Promise will be held at 6 p.m. April 28 at the Genesis Convention Center.
The event will include a silent auction, dinner and entertainment. The district's goal is to raise $300,000 and Johnson will reportedly "match what the district raises," said Gary school spokeswoman Charmella Greer.
The purpose of A Gary Promise is to provide scholarships for students who fulfill Indiana Core 40 requirements with a minimum grade point average of 2.5. The fund also will support mentoring and enrichment programs, student leadership development training and career-awareness projects for all grades.
School leaders said the ultimate goal is to accomplish a 100 percent graduation rate and assist students with identifying a postsecondary certification or training program.
Tickets are $75 per person or $750 per table. Sponsorship opportunities also are available. Tickets are available through the Gary Community School Corp. Service Center, 620 E. 10th Place, Gary, IN 46402, or by calling (219) 881-5481.
