CROWN POINT | A Gary man was charged with murder this week in connection with the fatal shooting of another man Friday in the city.
Robert Crawford, 26, is accused of killing Eugene Jackson Jr. in the 4400 block of Virginia Street.
A witness told police he had been working on Jackson's truck in the rear of the residence. While talking with Jackson in the front of the house, the witness saw a man, later identified as Crawford, walking in the middle of the street, according to charges filed by Lake County prosecutors.
Crawford approached, spoke to Jackson and shook his hand before taking a step back, pulling out a semi-automatic handgun and firing eight or nine shots at Jackson, court records state.
Jackson fell to the ground. Crawford fled with the witness in pursuit until the witness lost site of Crawford, according to court records.
Police found Jackson lying in a driveway unresponsive. Jackson was declared dead at the scene about 4:45 p.m., authorities said.
According to court records, Crawford was later identified as the shooter from a photographic display.
