GARY | Officers responding to a call of shots fired Wednesday night got in a shootout with a man who fired at them as they attempted to arrest him, police said.

Gary officers were called to the Dorie Miller Housing Development in the 1800 block East 20th Avenue about 7:40 p.m., when they heard shots being fired. Police said officers saw a man run in front of their vehicle holding a gun in his hand.

Officers ordered the man to drop the weapon, but the man instead raised the gun and began firing at officers, police said. The officers then returned fire.

Police chased the man, who got away but dropped his weapon. No injuries were reported.
