CROWN POINT | A 19-year-old Lake Station man was sentenced Wednesday to 22 years in prison for his role in the arson deaths of a Gary woman and her teenage daughter in July.
Trevontay Milsap admitted in December to having driven co-defendant Rafael Peluyera, 22, also of Lake Station, to an apartment complex in Gary knowing Peluyera intended to kill two men at the residence and burn theĀ building down.
Bernice King helped five of her six children jump from a bedroom window to escape the fire, but King stayed with her 14-year-old daughter Angel Harris, who could not flee due to severe asthma.
Both died in the fire.
Milsap's sentencing was capped at 22 years on two counts of arson, according to a plea agreement.
Peluyera pleaded guilty to two counts of murder in perpetration of an arson. He has agreed to serve a concurrent sentence of 65 years in prison.
Peluyera admitted to going to the apartment complex and bringing with him a can of gasoline to set the building on fire.
