PORTAGE | A man was rescued Saturday after his kayak sank in Lake Michigan near the Port of Indiana, officials said.

The man was not injured and was the only person in the kayak, according to a news release from the Portage Fire Department. Gary police called Portage after receiving a call at 7:16 a.m. that a man was in a sinking boat.

An employee from the dispatch center spoke to the man, who said he was in the water and was wearing a life preserver, according to the release. The Coast Guard in Michigan City issued a distress call to all boats in Lake Michigan.

A private boat found the man within 30 minutes, according to the release. The man was taken to the Portage Public Marina by a Coast Guard vessel.
