GARY | A 35-year-old man was shot and robbed after getting a ride with a stranger from the Majestic Star Hotel & Casino, police said.

Police responded to a call about a man bleeding from the leg at 2:16 a.m. Saturday in the 2500 block of Waverly Drive, police Cpl. Gabrielle King said.

The man had been at the casino and asked a stranger for a ride, King said. The stranger drove them to an apartment in the Westbrook Complex, where he got out of the car, telling his passenger he needed to make a quick stop, King said.

While the passenger waited, two unknown men walked up to the car, King said. The man felt uncomfortable, so he got out and started running. He heard a shot fired and felt a sharp pain in his leg, King said.

After the man fell, the two unknown men rifled through his pockets and stole an unknown amount of cash, King said. The man then knocked on apartment complex doors until someone answered and called 911, King said. The man was taken to an emergency room for treatment.

Anyone with information about this shooting is asked to call Sgt. Larry Robertson at (219) 881-7545.
