GARY | A 25-year-old Gary man was killed and two others wounded in a shooting there late Tuesday night that sent bullets flying through windows on area homes, police said.
No one in the homes was injured.
Ryan Davis of the 1800 block of W. 5th Ave. was pronounced dead at 12:20 a.m. Wednesday, a spokesman for the Lake County coroner's office said. The cause of death was listed as multiple gunshot wounds suffered in an apparent homicide.
According to Cpl. Gabrielle King, officers responded at 11:35 p.m. to a call of shots fired at W. 5th Avenue and Hayes Street for a report of shots fired. When officers arrived, they found Davis lying unresponsive on the corner and another victim who had been shot.
Emergency crews transported one of the victims, a 23-year-old man, to The Methodist Hospitals' Northlake campus in Gary for treatment. His condition was not known Monday morning.
As officers were investigating the crime scene, a third gunshot victim, an 18-year-old man, approached them and said he was standing in the 1600 block of S. 5th Avenue with a crowd of people when he saw someone come out of the alley and say "Get him" then begin shooting.
A resident of the 1700 block of W. 5th Avenue told police she just walked into her home just before midnight and heard gunshots. She ducked down and heard a window breaking. She later saw her living room window had a bullet hole in it.
One block over in the 1600 block of W. 5th Avenue, a resident told police she was watching TV around the same time when she heard several gunshots. The woman said she dropped to the floor and later saw a bullet shattered the exterior glass of her double-pane window.
