GARY | Gary Mayor Karen Freeman–Wilson dedicated several hours recently working with a Habitat for Humanity of Northwest Indiana crew to install vinyl siding on a new home at 635 Tyler St.
The home is being built for Carla Keaton and her a Habitat partner family. Keaton, along with her daughter and grandchild, plan to move into the home in October.
“I was very excited to learn that the mayor was actually going to be working on my home," Keaton said. “When I found out, I was like whoa, the mayor is coming to work on MY house? I felt kinda special.”
Several Habitat employees and other volunteers were on the site to welcome Freeman-Wilson, a first-time Habitat volunteer. The mayor said that she is interested in participating in upcoming builds and expressed interest in returning to the Tyler Street house to help paint it if her schedule allows.
Anyone interested in volunteering on a build can contact Volunteer Services Coordinator Kristin Marlow-Kellemen at (219) 923-7265, ext. 316 for more information, or visit nwihabitat.org for a complete build schedule.
