CROWN POINT | Two Gary men are accused of carjacking a couple in Merrillville Tuesday afternoon and leading police on a chase.

Rodney S. Perry Jr., 19, of Gary, and Devon M. Reed, 20, of Gary, face two counts of armed robbery, two counts of criminal confinement, carjacking and resisting law enforcement.

Marcus Taylor told police he picked up the men with his girlfriend about 7 p.m. Tuesday from the 1700 block of Broadway in Gary because Reed owed him money.

Taylor drove the men to an apartment complex in Merrillville so Reed could get the money in question. Instead, Reed and Perry got out of the car and each pointed a gun at Taylor and his girlfriend, according to the affidavit.

The men took the woman's watch, her cell phone, Taylor's vehicle and $830 from Taylor, according to the affidavit.

Officers began pursing the stolen vehicle after the men were spotted on Broadway. The car stopped on 41st Avenue, and officers began chasing Reed on foot.

After his arrest, Reed told police he and Perry carjacked the couple because Taylor wouldn't give Reed two cell phones he left in Taylor's car, according to the affidavit.
