CROWN POINT | Two brothers from Merrillville face multiple charges in the shooting and robbery of a Gary man accosted Sunday while working in his backyard, authorities said.
The victim survived surgery to remove a bullet near his spine, one of three wounds to his back and buttocks, Lake Criminal Court records state.
Carlton Smith, 22, faces charges of attempted murder, robbery resulting in bodily injury, two counts of criminal confinement, battery by means of a deadly weapon and possession of marijuana in the incident, court records show.
His brother, Christopher Smith, 21, is charged with robbery resulting in bodily injury and two counts of criminal confinement.
It was unclear Wednesday if a third suspect in the case would face any charges.
The victim told police he was explaining some yard work to his son in the 1900 block of West 12th Avenue in Gary when three men wearing masks and carrying handguns forced the victim and his son into the home, court records state.
Once inside, the suspects taped the victims' hands together demanding to know where the marijuana and money were, court records allege.
The father told the men he didn't know what they were talking about and became nervous when a woman drove up to the house, according to court records.
A fight ensued during which the victim was shot several times, and the suspects fled out the back door, prosecutors allege. Taken were the victim's cellphone, keys, money and other items.
During a search by police, the three suspects were found inside a Lexus in the parking lot of a liquor store. Christopher Smith reportedly was discovered to have been shot in the leg and Carlton Smith reportedly possessed marijuana.
