CROWN POINT | Prosecutors have charged a Merrillville man with attempted murder, alleging he shot a restaurant worker in the neck.
Willie Miller, 54, is also charged with aggravated battery, battery by means of a deadly weapon and battery resulting in serious bodily injury, all felonies.
The charges stem from Tuesday's attack on a worker as he was leaving a Gary restaurant to make a delivery.
The employee, Jerry Fields Jr., told police he was warming up the car used to make deliveries from the City Wrap restaurant in the 3700 block of Grant Street when a blue car pulled up in front of him.
The driver, later identified as Miller, demanded Fields give him the keys to the company car, court records state.
During the exchange, Miller pulled out a gun to shatter the car's window, firing two shots at Fields, according to court records.
Fields suffered a gunshot wound to the neck, the bullet lodging close to his spinal cord.
Court records state Miller admitted to shooting Fields, claiming the gun went off when Fields returned to the car and slammed the door.
Miller directed police to the shed behind his Merrillville residence where he placed the gun after the shooting, according to court records.
