CROWN POINT | A 19-year-old Merrillville man on Thursday pleaded guilty to reckless homicide in the 2001 shooting of Bryan McCoy.
McCoy, 39, was fatally wounded April 7 inside his home in the 600 block of East 48th Avenue in Gary.
Police at the time alleged McCoy was shot while Angel Garcia, then 17, was trying to buy a semiautomatic handgun from McCoy.
McCoy died at the scene of multiple gunshot wounds, according to the Lake County coroner's office.
On Thursday, Garcia admitted killing McCoy during a verbal dispute that turned physical. Garcia fired a handgun during the struggle, according to the plea agreement.
The plea agreement calls for Garcia to serve eight years in prison on the charge of reckless homicide.
Charges of murder and murder in the perpetration of a robbery will be dismissed as part of the agreement if accepted.
Sentencing was set for April 24 before Lake Criminal Court Judge Clarence Murray.
