CROWN POINT | Lake Criminal Court Judge Clarence Murray on Friday sentenced a 19-year-old Merrillville man to eight years in prison for the fatal shooting of a man during a dispute.

Angel Garcia admitted to killing 39-year-old Bryan McCoy when a verbal dispute turned physical inside the man's home in the 600 block of East 48th Avenue in Gary.

McCoy died of multiple gunshot wounds, according to the Lake County coroner's office.

A plea agreement reached last month called for Garcia to serve an eight-year sentence on a charge of reckless homicide.

At the time of the shooting, police said McCoy was shot when Garcia, then 17, was trying to buy a handgun from McCoy. However, prosecutors indicated there were differing versions of what had occurred.

Charges of murder and murder in the perpetration of a robbery were dismissed in exchange for Garcia's plea to reckless homicide.
