Gary Mayor Karen Freeman-Wilson was presented with the Senator Carolyn Mosby Above and Beyond Award during the Indiana Black Expo Corporate Luncheon on July 20 in Indianapolis.
The award is presented to someone who has made an ongoing commitment to serve humanity and someone who has persevered and overcome considerable odds to exceed others' expectations and achievements. The award was presented to the mayor by the late Senator Mosby’s daughter, Carolyn E. Mosby.
“I was very humbled to receive the Sen. Carolyn Mosby Above and Beyond Award at Black Expo,” said Freeman-Wilson. “I give thanks to God and know that I cannot do this alone. It will take all of us to turn Gary around.”
In 1990, the Indiana Black Expo Board of Directors voted to rename IBE’s Humanitarian Award in memory of the late Indiana State Senator. A press conference was held in Gary in April, 1990 to announce the naming of the award and sponsorship by NIPSCO.
Two special awards, with the image of the late senator, were presented to the Mosby family and to NIPSCO by then IBE Chairman of the Board Marilyn Brown and the late IBE President, the Rev. Charles Williams.
