CROWN POINT | Prosecutors have charged a Gary man — who had reported a shooting to police — with murder.
Jerode Cursey, 22, is accused of the fatal shooting of 35-year-old Dewayne Young, who was found dead Tuesday of multiple gunshots in his Chevy Blazer in the 1500 block of Delaware Street in Gary.
According to the probable cause affidavit, Cursey called police at 9:33 a.m. to tell them shots had been fired at a vehicle in which he found a man shot in the head.
When police responded, they found Young lifeless and his car struck several times by bullets whose .40-caliber shell casings were found nearby in the street, the affidavit states.
While police processed the scene, Cursey is reported lifting up the yellow crime tape and walking under it.
Warned several times not to continue trying to cross the police line, Cursey refused to leave and was placed under arrest, the affidavit states.
An older model Cadillac Eldorado, registered to Cursey, was found near the site of the shooting with a .40-caliber handgun and a box of shells in the back seat, according to the affidavit.
Two inmates at the Gary City Jail later reported Cursey admitting to the shooting and mentioning he hoped police didn't look inside his car, the affidavit states.
