GARY | A man wanted in connection with a Hammond murder took a group of people hostage for four hours Thursday night before surrendering to police, Lake County Sheriff John Buncich said.
According to Buncich, Hammond and Lake County authorities learned Marcus Flanagan, 18, would be at a home near W. 24th Avenue and Fairbanks Street on Thursday evening. Hammond officers went to the home around 6 p.m. in an attempt to take Flanagan into custody, Buncich said, and took four people hostage.
Buncich said it is believed Flanagan knew the individuals.
Hammond police contacted the Lake County SWAT team, which responded along with Gary police. Buncich said Flanagan surrendered peacefully around 10 p.m.
Nobody was injured in the incident, he said.
Flanagan was taken into custody by Hammond police, Buncich said.
Buncich described Flanagan as "very dangerous" and a known gang member.
Flanagan was wanted on felony murder and murder in the perpetration of a robbery charges in the Dec. 17 shooting death of Davis Alexander Jr., 32, of Hammond.
Court records state Flanagan, Marvel Arnez Harper and Dontrell Demetrius Hughes, all of Gary, allegedly beat and shot Alexander to death near Carroll Street and Alice Avenue. A witness told investigators she picked the three men up and took them to her Alice Street home for a drug deal.
The trio allegedly beat Alexander in the face while he sat in his car in front of the woman's house. Alexander began running down Carroll Street toward Calumet Avenue and Flanagan allegedly shot Alexander five times.
