The Senior Farmers' Market Nutrition Program provides access to fresh fruits and vegetables from local farmers. Northwest Indiana Community Action, in partnership with the Indiana State Health Department, is hosting the Senior Farmers’ Market Nutrition Program in Lake, Porter, Starke, Pulaski, Jasper, and Newton counties again this year.

The program provides vouchers up to $20 for individuals 60 years or older to purchase fresh fruits and vegetables from participating local farmers markets and food stands.

The health benefits of consuming fresh produce, the social interaction provided at the market, and the financial savings makes this a valuable program for both older Hoosiers and local farmers, according to a NWICA spokesperson.

To be eligible, residents must be 60 or older as of Oct. 1, 2013, provide proof of Indiana eesidency (current Driver’s License or State Identification), provide proof of household income not more than 185 percent of the Annual Poverty Income Guidelines.

No income verification is required if applicant shows documentation of participation in TANF, Food Stamps at the time of application.

The list of approved Indiana Senior Farmers’ Market Nutrition Program markets and stands for 2013  includes the Highland Street Market on Saturdays at Main Square Park, the Crown Point Farmers Market on Saturdays on South Main Street downtown, Remus Farm Market in Hobart and Scheeringa Farm & Produce in Highland. A full list is available at
