Braving 25-degree temperatures and blowing snow, 54 people from across Northwest Indiana joined the Rev. Theodore Mens, pro-life director for the Diocese of Gary, at the 40th anniversary March For Life on Jan. 25 in Washington D.C.
In peaceful, prayerful protest of the U.S. Supreme Court decision in 1973 that made abortion legal, an estimated crowd of several hundred thousand took part in the march.
Eighth-graders from St. Mary School in Griffith, their parents, students from Bishop Noll Institute in Hammond, the Rev. David Kime and the Rev. Ben Ross, priests from the Diocese of Gary, took part in the pilgrimage to Capitol Hill and the Supreme Court. The diocesan group also attended the National Prayer Vigil for Life celebrated by Sean Cardinal O'Malley, O.F.M., archbishop of Boston, at the Basilica of the National Shrine of the Immaculate Conception in Washington. Hundreds of cardinals, bishops, priests and seminarians also took part in the Mass.
Friday morning before the March for Life, the Diocese of Gary group attended the Archdiocese of Washington Youth Rally and Mass for Life at the Verizon Center with principal celebrant, Donald Cardinal Wuerl, archbishop of Washington D.C.
After the march, Mens and the diocesan group joined with a group from Franciscan Alliance, Hammond and Dyer, and met with representatives from U.S. SenatorS Joe Donnelly (D-Indiana) and Dan Coats (R-Indiana) and spoke with U.S. Rep. Pete Visclosky (D-Merrillville) to voice their concerns about pro-life issues.
