GARY | A 39-year-old man was gunned down in a car Tuesday morning, marking the city's 40th homicide this year.
Dewayne L. Young, of the 500 block of Virginia Street in Gary, died from a gunshot wound, according to the Lake County coroner's office. He was pronounced dead at 10:30 a.m.
Gary police responded at 9:30 a.m. to the 1500 block of Delaware Street after receiving calls about gunshots heard in the area. Young was found sitting in the driver's seat of a black SUV and had multiple gunshot wounds, Gary police said. He died at the scene.
Young's mother sat crying Tuesday night outside a house a few homes down from where she lived with her son. She declined to comment.
"He didn't do anything to anyone," she said to a friend who sat next to her.
According to Ivy Tech Community College's website, Young was a student and an employee at the school's Gary branch.
The death marks the city's 40th homicide of the year. In 2012, the city logged 43 homicides.
Gary Police Chief Wade Ingram said homicides are up, but gunshot victims are down.
Law enforcement and elected officials have teamed up to create regional teams to try to curb the violence plaguing the city.
