A Gary man was charged with theft and resisting law enforcement when he fled from police after stealing a boxed television set from a truck stop off the Borman Expressway, authorities said.

Wardell Brown was seen by officers with the television set just outside the Travel Center of America, 2510 Burr St., on Friday, and one of the officers asked him to stop, according to a probable cause affidavit filed with the Lake County Prosecutor's Office.

Brown allegedly fled across the street, through a neighborhood and into a wooded area. Officers apprehended Brown in the 2400 block of Hanley Street in Gary.

Brown initially denied but then confessed he took the television and led officers to it, according to police.
