GARY | Police found the body of a 55-year-old man apparently killed by gunfire in an alley after responding to a call at 10:53 a.m. Saturday.

Richard Lewis, of Gary, suffered mutliple gunshot wounds in a homicide, according to a release from the Lake County coroner's office. Lewis was pronounced dead at 12:27 p.m.

A passer-by saw Lewis' body in an alley between the 200 blocks of Tyler and Polk streets and called police, who found him with no signs of life, according to Gary police. The Lake County coroner's office was called, and the body was removed to the morgue.

Gary has logged more than 50 homicides this year. In 2012, the city reported 43 homicides.

Anyone with information about Lewis' case is asked to call police Cpl. Mike Barnes at (219) 881-7434.
