A Gary police officer arrested in Oklahoma this week was a passenger in a rental car carrying 48 pounds of marijuana, officials said Wednesday.
Marla Guye, 29, of Gary, remained jailed Wednesday in Lincoln County, Okla., on allegations she was participating in drug trafficking.
The driver of the rented white Ford Escape, Terrance Gee, 25, also was arrested early Tuesday. He bonded out of jail Wednesday, officials said.
Oklahoma Highway Patrol stopped Gee about 6:30 a.m. Tuesday on the Turner Turnpike for failing to signal a lane change, agency spokeswoman Trooper Betsy Randolph said.
Guye and Gee gave consent to search the rented truck, Randolph said.
Troopers found 48 pounds of marijuana packaged in two separate bundles inside a suitcase in the vehicle, Randolph said.
The couple were heading to Indiana from Arizona, she said.
Oklahoma police said Gee was living in Avondale, Ariz. However, Gee is also listed in the Lake County court system as a Michigan City resident.
Guye is employed as a Community Oriented Police officer with Gary police. She didn't show up to work Tuesday although she was scheduled, Gary Chief Wade Ingram said.
Ingram said he will be seeking to terminate Guye's employment if she is convicted of the charge.
Oklahoma police officials were scheduled to meet with a district attorney in Lincoln County, Okla., on Thursday to formally charge Gee and Guye with drug trafficking.
Guye's bond was set at $7,500. She was set for a court appearance Monday.
Gee was scheduled to reappear in court Nov. 27, according to jail officials.
