GARY | A Gary teen was charged Friday with killing his father, police said.
Thomas Mallory Jr., 17, told police he fatally shot his father, 39-year-old Thomas Mallory, on Wednesday morning because his father beat his mother and threatened to plant drugs in the teen's room and then call police, Gary police Cpl. Gabrielle King said.
The elder Mallory died of a single gunshot wound to the neck at his home in the 5600 block of West 37th Avenue, according to the Lake County coroner's office.
Mallory's wife, who is the teen's mother, was at a grocery store when the shooting occurred, King said. The woman called Gary police after returning home to find her husband bleeding and unresponsive.
Thomas Mallory Jr. confessed and told police he wrapped the gun in a blanket and put it in his mother's car, King said. His mother gave police permission to search the car, and they recovered the gun.
Thomas Mallory Jr. was charged Friday with murder, Lake Criminal Court records show.
If convicted, he faces up to 60 years in prison.
