GARY | A Gary man was found hiding a closet with handcuffs still on Tuesday after he fled police custody, officials said.
Garrick Thomas, 24, is facing charges of escape, resisting law enforcement, possession of a gun with no permit and possession of marijuana after being placed in a police car for an alleged attempted shooting, a Gary police news release states.
According to Gary Police Chief Wade Ingram, police were called to the 800 block of N. Wells Street on Tuesday morning for a call of shots fired in the Miller Village Apartments complex. When officers arrived, witnesses identified a man as the one who fired four rounds at another individual.
No one was hit by the bullets, Ingram said.
Thomas told police he was shooting and claimed somebody else was shooting at him, the release states.
He was placed in handcuffs and put into the back of a squad car as police searched the area for any other suspects, police said.
Investigators believe he crawled from the backseat of the police car to the front seat and was able to exit the car from there, the release states.
Police received a tip that Thomas was hiding in another apartment in the area. He was found inside a closet, police said.
A woman at that apartment, Bobbi White, was arrested when police found Thomas. White, 31, is facing charges of maintaining a common nuisance and harboring a fugitive.
A gun was recovered from the initial call and drugs were found in the apartment where Thomas was found, the release states.
Two children, ages 1 and 2, were in the apartment when police found Thomas. They were released to Indiana Department of Child and Family Services officials, police said.
