GARY | Police were investigating a homicide Friday afternoon at a home in the city's Glen Park section.

Lake County police radio dispatcher asked county officers shortly after 3:30 p.m. to assist Gary police in searching for a suspect seen limping from a home in the 4400 block of Virginia Street.

The Lake County coroner's office said Eugene Jackson, 33, who lived on that Virginia Street block, was pronounced dead at 4:55 p.m. of multiple gunshot wounds near his home. His death was the 49th homicide reported in Gary this year.

An officer on the scene was heard on a police scanner saying a large crowd of people had gathered outside the victim's home and had to be dispersed to set up a perimeter for the investigation.

Lake County police described the suspect as a black male, 5 feet, 10 inches tall wearing a gray jacket with no sleeves.

Gary police didn't return calls seeking comment.
