GARY | A Highland man fired a gun in front of a Gary residence before dropping it in the grass and telling officers he only had a toy gun, police said.
John Berrios Jr., 48, was arrested at 2:20 a.m. after threatening to kill a man inside a house in the 3800 block of Cleveland Street in Gary, police Cpl. Gabrielle King said.
Berrios is accused of knocking on the door and shouting for the man to come out. When the man did, Berrios pulled a handgun, King said.
The man went back inside, and Berrios fired the gun and yelled, "I'll kill you," King said.
When officers arrived, they saw Berrios drop something in a grassy area, King said. Berrios told police the toy gun he had on him was his only gun, but officers recovered a real gun from the grassy area and neighbors said they heard a real gunshot, King said.
Anyone with information about the crime is asked to call Gary police at (219) 881-1201.
