GARY | A woman was found dead in the passenger seat of a car stopped by police Thursday night.
A child was in the back seat in the car, which had significant front-end damage and one headlight.
The driver of the older-model red Pontiac Grand Am was stopped at the Shop'n'Go Mini Mart at 25th Avenue and Harrison Street and later taken to a local hospital for treatment, police said. The child was given medical attention at the scene but found to be unharmed, police said.
As coroner's officials pulled the dead woman out of the passenger side of the car, a band was seen wrapped around the upper part of her left arm.
Police are investigating how the car was damaged. Gary Police Chief Wade Ingram said he expects this to remain a death investigation, not a homicide.
