GARY | Lake County police said they were forced to shoot an aggressive pit bull Thursday during a drug raid at a Gary man's home.

Patti VanTil, a spokeswoman for Sheriff John Buncich, said members of the department tactical team executed a search warrant early Thursday on a residence in the 4100 block of West 15th Avenue, west of the city's downtown.

Officers arrested George J. Lewis Jr., 54, of that address, on charges of dealing in a controlled substance and possession of a controlled substance. Police said they seized 0.6 grams of heroin from the residence.

"At the scene, it was necessary to destroy an aggressive pit bull who attacked an officer upon entry into the residence," Van Til said.
