GARY | Miller-Dunes American Legion Auxiliary members will distribute poppies today and Saturday in the community in commemoration of veterans who gave their lives in the service of ther country. Volunteers will be outside Great Lakes Cafe, 201 Mississippi St.; Miller K Market on Melton Road near Clay Street; Walgreen's on Lake Street; and Jonathan's Pancake House on Melton Road.

"Please be generous as all proceeds are used only to benefit veterans," said Pat Kelly of the auxiliary.

The idea of the poppy as a memorial flower for those who died in WWI arose as naturally as did the little wild red flowers that grew in the fields of France and Flanders, one bit of beauty that survived the destruction of war.

Wearing the little red poppy signifies honoring the dead and helping the living, since disabled veterans are paid a small stipend for each poppy they assemble.
