GARY | Habitat for Humanity of Northwest Indiana Inc. partners with other nonprofit organizations to help contribute to its mission of raising funds to help end poverty housing.
Habitat is currently working with In-Pact, an organization designed to help adults with disabilities, and has also teamed up with The Arc Northwest Indiana’s Community Connections program by welcoming a new client, Dustin Alcorn, to volunteer there.
Alcorn is pursuing The Job Development program for adults with disabilities at The Arc Northwest Indiana.
“We think Dustin is a great asset here at the ReStore,” said John Disco, ReStore’s assistant Mmanager and volunteers coordinator. “We are happy to give back to the community that has given so much to us, especially when there is so much work to do.”
New items arrive daily at the Habitat for Humanity of Northwest Indiana ReStore from donors, and sometimes it takes everyone on hand to unload some of the large donations that individuals drop off.
Recently a large television cabinet that was imported from Mexico made its way to the ReStore and all the volunteers and staffers came together to unload the cabinet and many other items that the donor had brought.
“It was a bitterly cold day, and we were really lucky to have a great crew of volunteers to help bring in this large item,” Disco said.
Bringing in donations is only the beginning of the process at the ReStore. “Donations often need a little cleaning, polishing and other minor touch ups before we can put them out for sale,” Disco added.
Alcorn, who volunteers weekly, assisted in making sure the imported cabinet was ready for sale by meticulously polishing it.
Anyone interested in volunteering at the ReStore or on other Habitat for Humanity projects can email firstname.lastname@example.org or call (219) 923-7265. You can also call if you have items that you would like to donate.
The ReStore is open to the public from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.Tuesday through Saturday and is located at 6114 W. Ridge Road in Gary.
