CROWN POINT | Rudy Clay has begun his newest public role, government consultant.
Lake County commissioners voted 2-1 Wednesday to award a contract to Clay's newly-formed Utility Refund Guaranteed Inc. to recover money the county may have overpaid its telephone company vendor.
Clay will pay the county 75 percent of any refunds he wins and keep the remainder.
Clay had wanted to keep 40 percent of the refund, but reduced his fee "because of my love for the taxpayers of Lake County," he told commissioners Wednesday.
Commissioner Gerry Scheub, D-Crown Point voted against the contract. He said after the meeting he thought the work could be done by county employees at no extra cost.
Clay has served over the last four decades as a Gary city councilman, a state senator for Gary, county recorder, county commissioner and until last year as Gary mayor.
