GARY | A semitruck pulling a box trailer caught fire Wednesday morning, causing northbound traffic on Interstate 65 in Gary to come to a standstill during morning rush hour.
According to a preliminary investigation by Master Trooper Brian White, the driver noticed smoke coming from his tractor exhaust stacks before the truck caught fire.
The Freightliner semitrailer was northbound on the interstate near the Ridge Road exit about 7:32 a.m. when the vehicle began to smoke. Soon after, the tractor became engulfed in flames.
All northbound lanes on I-65 were shut down while the fire was being extinguished, and southbound lanes were affected due to heavy smoke. The northbound lanes reopened at 9:08 a.m.
The semitrailer, owned by Schneider National Carriers of Gary, was coming from Gas City, Ind., and heading to Chicago. The fire destroyed the tractor. Smoke damaged the box trailer loaded with canned food.
