MERRILLVILLE | The staff of Merrillville Animal Hospital  turned some unwanted items into cash for a good cause last month when they hosted a hosted a giant yard sale to raise money for the Humane Society of Northwest Indiana, 6100 Melton Road in Gary.

The event offered great deals on gently-used clothing, furniture, music, toys, pet supplies, and just about everything under the sun.

The idea for the fundraiser came from Merrillville Animal Hospital employee Anna Ponce Sadlowski who, with permission from hospital owners Dr. Douglas and Linda Marler, enlisted the help of her co-workers and friends - Brandy Thomas, Steve Fields, Sarah Denton, Brandon Denton, and Erica Elmore – to collect items and conduct the sale in the hospital parking lot at 6226 Cleveland St.

A total of $747.64 was raised, and Sadlowski presented the donation to HSNI board member Mary Ann Massa as volunteers cheered. The HSNI had volunteers taking care of the many adoptable animals that were on site, chilling in the shade for bargain seekers to meet.
