CALUMET TOWNSHIP | The Lake County Sheriff's Department officials plan to honor a fifth-grader Thursday whose quick thinking helped a woman having a seizure.

Melvin Jernigan was on his way to Hosford Park School when he walked to a friend's house and saw his friend's mother was having a seizure, Lake County deputies said. Melvin called 911 and waited with the woman until emergency personnel arrived.

Sheriff John Buncich plans to recognize Melvin's quick thinking at 11:45 a.m. Thursday at Hosford Park School in Calumet Township.
