Phi Delta Kappa Inc., a national sorority for education professionals, recently presented scholarships to two deserving seniors from Lake County.
The purpose of this sorority is to stimulate professional growth among teachers, to foster true sisterhood, to promote the highest teaching ideals, and to encourage the development of the potential of our youth.
Each year Phi Delta Kappa Inc. awards national, regional and local scholarships to the Xinos (female high school students) or Kudos (male high school students).
Paige Peterson, a graduating senior from Gary Lighthouse Charter School and daughter of Aubere Peterson and Vickie Herndon, recently received two scholarships from the sorority. She has been a dedicated member of the Xinos Club for four years and served as parliamentarian in 2011-12.
Peterson earmned a $6,000 scholarship from national sorority, $400 from the Xinos organization and a book scholarship from the local Beta Mu chapter. She is planning to attend Loyola University in Chicago, Ill. with major in secondary education.
Jaleesa King, daughter of Pamela King, a recent graduate from West Side Leadership Academy in Gary, received two book scholarships, one from the Beta Mu chapter and the other from the Xinos organization. She plans to study early childhood education at San Francisco Community College.
Mary Holly is the Basileus of Beta Mu and Sadie Ethridge is the director of the Xinos group.
